Programs and Services:
The Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) provides academic support through services that help first generation college students excel at USCU. Any student enrolled at USCU may apply to participate in the Opportunity Scholars Program. OSP offers its participants a wide range of services and programs, free of charge. Participants are required to meet with an OSP counselor twice a semester (once before the 8th week of each semester and again before the end of each semester). Additional contacts may be made as needed. Please contact the office to make an appointment at (864) 429-8728 ext. 7750 or stop by the TRIO/SSS office in C-106. In case of emergency, please contact the office for immediate counselor assistance.
OSP students receive academic advisement on an individual basis. Students' schedules, progress, and grades are closely monitored each semester.
OSP students are offered assistance in assessing career plans and setting realistic career goals. Career inventories are used to help identify student's career choices.
OSP provides a limited number of graphing and scientific calculators, tape recorders and other equipment for participant use. Calculators and tape recorders can be checked out on a semester basis. Availability is first come-first serve. To borrow a calculator or other equipment, contact the OSP office. Note: a Calculator/Tape Recorder/ Equipment responsibility contract agreement is required which requires a hold on student records if the equipment is not returned at the end of the semester.
Ten laptops are loaned on a 7-day basis to students. You must be an OSP participant to rent these. See Sabrina Sims in Room 105. Students may make up to ten copies a day on the copier located in C209.
OSP offers workshops related to financial aid and scholarships. OSP staff also assist students in completing financial aid paperwork, inform students of relevant scholarship opportunities, and post important university deadlines.
Peer Mentors are exemplary OSP students who act as mentors to freshman program participants. Students may apply for these positions once enrolled in OSP.
