Library
Student Assistant I, II
Up to 20 hours per week
Enter new patron information in the online circulation system; prepare identification cards and circulation policy sheets for mailing.
Check out and check in books and other materials using the online circulation system.
Check shelves for items identified by overdue notices; mail outstanding ones.
Determine fines for overdue materials; list receipt of fines and interlibrary loan charges in the red book.
Check in and display current issues of newspapers and periodicals; return back issues to appropriate shelves; check for missing issues; clip USC Union news items periodically.
Reshelve all materials returned to the circulation desk after use.
Read assigned shelf sections to insure that all collections are in call number or title order as appropriate.
Aid patrons in the use of the photocopier, the computers, and the location of materials.
Answer the telephone properly and take messages when staff is not available.
Type call number and other labels, reports, correspondence, etc., as needed.
Check the audio/visual equipment reservation calendar daily; set up and retrieve equipment as needed.
Act as security at the outgoing door by checking patrons’ belongings for noncirculating materials.
Distribute adjunct, shuttle, and Laurens mail and packages as needed.
Help in light housekeeping of the Library by dusting shelves, wiping books, etc., as needed.
Other duties as needed.
When classes are in session (fall, spring, summer), library student assistants are expected to work one night during the week when the Library is open from 5:00 to 7:00 pm (Monday through Thursday). Assistants are also expected to work one Sunday per month from 1:30 to 5:30 pm, only during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Chemistry Lab
Laboratory Assistant I, II, III
15 hours per week
The laboratory assistant position requires that the worker have some experience in science (at least a high school biology/chemistry course) and a high level of dependability/self motivation. The duties include lab cleanup (washing dishes, sweeping floors, disposing of trash, etc.), lab preparation/setup, and some clerical responsibilities (xeroxing, filing, etc.). While this position would have many advantages for a student with a science major, the student is only required to have an interest in science and a willingness to learn some specialized techniques (including safety procedures).
